He's not very good, of course, but the judo instructor steps in for Barney and then kicks the ass of the guy who's been picking on him. What is he, a walking dictionary of a secret society? And so yeah. So he still didn't' have a lot of faith in Jean-Claude's acting abilities and decided not to make it. In the early to mid 90s, dinosaurs were soooo cool! We do it your way. We had a nice conversation and promised each other to meet up when he was back in LA. There's an authenticity to it.Blake Harris: Speaking of authenticity, I was wondering how much of the movie is accurate to your own life experiences?Frank Dux: Well the fighting scenes were very accurate. By Earwolf, Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas. He used to tell everybody he was a ninja; I think he still maintains he was a ninja and took his training from this guy named Tanaka. Why not make a budd. Well, about the only thing they showed was a trophy receipt.Blake Harris: Which they claimed was evidence that the trophy you won was "at least partially made in the San Fernando Valley? You wanted to help him be successful. And so how did you swivel from that experience into something in the film world?Sheldon Lettich: This will sound like it's coming completely out of left field, but the first time I actually got paid to write a script was a horror film that involved voodoo.Blake Harris: Yeah, I think that qualifies as "left field" status.Sheldon Lettich: [laughing] What happened was I had met [Blaxploitation star] Leon Isaac Kennedy, who wanted to option a script of mine. These guys, after brutally going at each other, now they were just laughing it off. And the CIA and everyone is obligated to tell you? This thing, it had legs, and started traveling around the world (London, Australia, etc. We just became friends almost immediately. Brought his wife with him and we just hit it off, right from the getgo. And his wife and my wife became even closer friends. He's also said it under oath by the way and identified me. Released in 1988, Bloodsport tells the story of Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), a captain in the U.S. Army and an experienced martial artist, who ignores his superiors and competes in an illegal martial arts tournament in Hong Kong. There were a number of people who really liked it. And I said, "If you're gonna go, just don't pull me with you." Because there are so many issues with the rights to that project. Like M was Admiral Menzies. That's the thing. He was very stiff. So it was lot of college hijinks, trying to get girls and all that stuff. And, like I said, it got me my first agent, a guy named Harold Moskowitz[starts laughing] who, a little while later, was looking for help with another one of his clients. And he just laughed and said, "Come on, let me show you this house. His contract was not for writing, it was for use of his name and a portion of his "real-life story." You can't just go in there and get it. Blake Harris: That story in the L.A. Times was pretty brutal. And then all the Black Dragons got around methey were like the Hells Angels of the martial arts world at that timeand I didn't know what they were going to do. And they've never wavered from that.Blake Harris: The kick?Sheldon Lettich: Yeah. In 1987's Superman #4, by John Byrne and Karl Kesel, Superman tried to stop Bloodsport's rampage through Metropolis. If they'd actually served. But he had a great imagination, he had good ideas and he knew the martial arts world pretty well. And they did. But he was telling me about this tournament that he participated in where all the best fighters in the world showed up. Occasionally he'd come by the studio. None of that is reported. If he had to be the bad guy and killed by the protagonist. But then Ed Pressman, who had done Street Fighter, he wanted to do another movie with Jean-Claude. So my agent sent him Firebase and he responded very enthusiastically. They didn't know what to do, but they thought they'd give me a call. KUMITE! People don't really know that about Lee, but he had one leg shorter than the other. He had a karate background. But yes, Idris Elba did an amazing job being the reluctant leader. In fact, Midway Games attempted to license Van Damme's image for the game. So we had no budget on that movie and we did a great job. One of the only places where we initially differed was with the entry point. It sold well at the box office, grossing $65 million on a budget of $1.5-2.3 million. As a result, he's spent the past 28 years dealing with perpetual allegations of being a fake and a fraud. Bloodsport is the name of several supervillains appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. All of these versions exist in DC's main shared universe, known as the DC Universe.. You can listen to theBloodsportedition of the HDTGM podcasthere. And at the Invitationals, there's Bruce Lee. I think that's why people really love it. Then he said, "It's my movie too and I want what's best for the film! The uniform they had for Jean-Claude was silk pajamas, these Chinese silk pajamas. Okay, okay, you made your point. My very first fight in Tijuana, they were fighting six of us, and there were only five us there; we were waiting for another guy. And I showed them, here's an issue of Black Belt magazine from two years prior to this; and here's a photo of me in that magazine from January 1976 right after I won it, holding the trophy. So it should be a total of six blows, except this turned out to be a total of eight because of those two to Vic's head. KUMITE! And I had read an article, in this magazine called M, about the French Foreign Legion. It's hard to call the young Van Damme's performance "good" in any traditional sense of the word, but . He actually challenged me to a fight. But here's a photo from the screening, so I guess at least one person wanted to have their photo taken with me. They were supposed to present the supposed evidence that said things didn't exist. KUMITE! What was all this camaraderie about? Took me a long, long time to write that script. They were going to do a movie called Night of the Leopard but there were some problems with getting the script so now they needed a new one. We have a treatment and we started writing the script. In a recent documentary, Admiral Horton Smith not only acknowledges that I was a covert operative, but also states that any record of mine would have to come out of the Federal Intelligence Court. I was there at every meeting and, of course, they were getting all the ideas out of me. It was awarded the Drama-Logue Critics' Award for Direction and the Los Angeles Drama Critics' Award for Ensemble Performance. But the truth is, I had already written a script called Enter the Ninja. And I think it's because he felt very insecure. And the receipt was dated 1982, okay? And what really grabbed Sheldon's attention was the fights.Blake Harris: So what happened with the script? For the first time in about 14 years. And like I said, guys like Sheldon didn't help, putting a knife in my back.Blake Harris: So what was it like seeing him at the screening?Frank Dux: I was cordial. I'm not gonna stoop to his level. He didn't like it. No Retreat No Surrender movie led to Van Damme getting the lead in Bloodsport (1988). How blindsided were you when the piece came out?Frank Dux: Well, there was nothing I could do. Because Jean-Claude uses people and chews them up as quick as he can. Blake Harris: Since martial arts is, and has been, such a large part of your life, I was wondering if it was also a large part of your childhood.Frank Dux: Actually, no. (w/ Nicole Byer) 4/7/2023 More HDTGM all-star Nicole Byer (Grand Crew, Nailed It!) What I said to them [the LA Times] was that the only way you could get a hold of my records was to go to Federal Intelligence Court. he's a terrible actor. Sheldon wrote Legionnaire and was supposed to direct it, but then Jean-Claude got someone else. But if we can cut it down, I think we can sell this novel. Sometimes we get answers to questions like these, and other times we do not. But they still run it. And then he did a kick that missed his face by like two inches. The film finds the Suicide Squad going on a mission to the fictional country of Corto Maltese to carry out a mission to destroy a secret installation housing a secret weapon known as Project Starfish. How much of the story really happened? How did you feel afterwards?Frank Dux: It was an enlightening moment. 8. We Hate Movies podcast did Timecop for one of their eps, and likewise, it is one of their best eps. That this guy looks just like me and we should suggest it to Mark DiSalle. And at this point in time I don't think it's going to happen.Blake Harris: Ah, too bad. You try to get him to do a judo throw and he couldn't throw anybody. Bloodsport wasn't an Oscar-worthy film in any manner (the original cut was deemed unwatchable and a re-edit was completed before release), but Van Damme's stoic charisma and the memorable. He says, "I love you. So any time you want to know who an agent is you can just go down there and file a request? So those are the three elements. Neither of them was about a martial arts tournament, and neither of them was ever produced. I made a joke and it just took him out of it, snapped him out of it.Blake Harris: Laughter is the best medicine, right?Frank Dux: I took him out of it. "But Sly," I said, "it really wouldn't work that way because one thing that's been established with Rambo is that he's the baddest motherf***er in the world, but he doesn't want to fight. But I thought you said Menahem still wasn't fully sold on Jean-Claude.Sheldon Lettich: He wasn't. I gotta tell you: Seeing it years later, I didn't realize how good it was. And the two of them, they didn't talk about it, but they'd basically bicker through their agents because neither one wanted to be the criminal who gets killed at the end. One contribution I made to that script though was suggesting to Jean-Claude that he set the story in the past. In fact, I never even got story credit for it.Blake Harris: That's rough.Frank Dux: Well, Sheldon has made a career out of coming in behind me and putting his name on my work, okay? We'd shoot one side of the screen with one of the brothers and then Jean-Claude would have to change his hair, make-up, wardrobe and we'd have a double standing in for another brother. And regardless of what any critics may say or believe, I don't think anyone would argue that you weren't extremely talented. Bloodsport (1988) Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Forest Whitaker based on experiences in the life of martial artist Frank W. Dux My involvement in that tournament was part of a plan, launched in 1975, to infiltrate the criminal organizations that organized the fights. What really made Bloodsport special, though, was the work of Jean-Claude Van Damme. It was offered to him and Seagal. I thought: Oh shit, I'm going to get my ass handed to me. "Blake Harris: So what eventually changed Menahem's mind? You gotta admire the fact that he wanted to get a real Vietnam vet working on the script with him. It was just a way to release it. And apparently it did huge business. And I gotta give him credit there. The truth. They passed on it. Joseph Papp heard about it, so he brought the show to the Public Theatre in New York. And Menahem was dead set against it.Blake Harris: Why?Sheldon Lettich: [Laughing at the memory] His word for Jean-Claude was "poison." And so the ink was barely dry when I drove right over to Moshe's house and we signed a deal to do what became Double Impact.Blake Harris: From a technological standpoint, what were some of the biggest challenges with shooting two Jean-Claudes?Sheldon Lettich: The biggest challenges were that we were still using old technology. Jean-Claude was doing movies for Columbia and they wanted him to bring them some ideas for movies and we brought that idea to them. And if somebody tells me they were in Vietnam, and in the Marine Corps, I'll believe them. Enter the Ninja?Sheldon Lettich: No, there was no script prior to the "Bloodsport" script. A number of ideas were thrown out. So I just started calling it Bloodsport, and that was useful because this type of fighting, it had a different name depending on where you were. And then Hollywood got to him and he started showing signs of manic depression, you know?Blake Harris: In what way?Frank Dux: I'll never forget. He was good at boxing. That was invented, right then and there. It took me years to understand the producer's point, but I do now. He was just polite. KUMITE! And here comes Moore, and Moore drops him in under 30 seconds. I said to Frank, "That's a great title for a movie." KUMITE! It's not something that I'm interested in, but good luck." It worked great. And as soon as he was back in LA, he gave me a call and came over to my apartment in Park La Brea. They were just being assholes.Blake Harris: That seemed to happen a lot at CannonSheldon Lettich: Now Blake, I have never filed a lawsuit against anyone in this business, but I filed a lawsuit against those guys, against Cannon. I kid you not.Blake Harris: So you weren't some kind of jiujutsu prodigy?Frank Dux: Not at all. So cool, in fact, that now we have a professional basketball team called The Raptors and no one raised an eyebrow about why a team from Tornoto, Canada would be named that. The other thing is that Jean-Claude, like I said, he had this uncanny way he looked. I met Gladys, the woman of my dreams, I had a baby, and I'm miserable. Following his appearances in the two preceding sequels, Daniel Bernhardt returns in the new role of Agent John Keller, who goes into prison . Now, Frank did contribute a number of ideas to the Bloodsport script, but he claimed these were "life events" that actually happened to him, not fiction. And it became real clear and finallyI said show me the proof that I represented myself as a war hero, as a Medal of Honor hero? "Blake Harris: Can I guess that the novel was The Last Rainbow [by Frank Dux]?Sheldon Lettich: Yup. Jean-Claude, Michel Qissi and we were all predicting how much money the movie was going to make.Blake Harris: That's wonderful.Sheldon Lettich: Yes, but there was still an additional hurdle. Like, very famously, he turned down Demolition Man. And I said, "Jean-Claude, that's bullshit. So we changed the title to Stryker's Force and we gave the character's different names. Jean-Claude saw Menahem on the street, did a U-Turn and said, "Hey Menahem, remember me? As far as, like, the choreography for how fights go and stuff. I went into the offices of the L.A. Times with my attorney with the actual fight film footage. He was pure, he didn't do drugs. He knew enough buzzwords to make me think he's the real deal, he's probably been over there. Like with Legionnaire. But I didn't sleep with a reporter beforehand and I certainly didn't break into my instructor's house and steal a sword. I really screwed up. But I learned to conquer it, okay? After the fight, I go down to him and I said, "Hey, Mr. Moore, do you remember me?" And Leon was going to star in the movie, which we called The White House All Stars with the "White House" being a frat house at this college where all the football players lived. At what point along the way were his fears diminished?Frank Dux: Well it was diminished when they were going to get rid of himJean-Claude doesn't realize how close he was to never having a careerand I took Mark off to the side and I said, "Look, I'm betting it all, Mark." He kept saying, "Jean-Claude is poison!" But back then it sounded really cool.Blake Harris: Well you started that clich!Sheldon Lettich: [laughter] Back then, to say "based on a true story" was something that intrigued, and I think it particularly intrigued Menahem Golan. ". Bloodsport (original trailer 720p en) Watch on Synopsis: U.S. Army Captain Frank Dux ( Jean-Claude Van Damme ), who had been trained as a boy by the legendary Ninjutsu master Senzo Tanaka,. Back then, things were so different. A secret martial arts contest? Plus the guy was just an idol of mine. I'll tell you one thing: When I was there, I got a standing ovation. And, look, in the mid-80's, something like that sounded real intriguing. I wrote the script, got paid a small fee and I can't remember how much time passedprobably less than a yearand via another guy named Lou Horwitza financer who, I believe, did gap-financing at the timeLou took it to Cannon. And I'll never forgetand I'm terrified of heights, by the way. So he started taking me to construction sites where I could get work. And so he says yeah, sure, give it a shot. "There is not Mr. Tanaka in Japanese history" of the Ninja families, Tanemura said. They'll cover Frank Dux being a real man, Van Damme's soft baby b. And the story there, which I've told many times, came from Frank telling me about his exploits. But Michael Dudikoff is like 6'2," and the problem was they wanted to film in Asia. Blake Harris: So we know how Sheldon entered the picture, but how does Jean-Claude Van Damme become involved with Bloodsport?Frank Dux: Oh, Jean-Claude tells this crazy story. Dux said the military ordered his record sabotaged to discredit him. Look, Stallone was the biggest star in the world at the time and to even have a meeting with him was, to me, a huge honor. After directing Jean-Claude in Double Impact [1991] and Lionheart [1990] before that, was there any reason you didn't want to be involved with writing or directing?Sheldon Lettich: That was right after another movie I did called Only the Strong [1993] and I seemed to have a lot of other things going on. On Bloodsport, we got into it during one of the fight scenes. It's a way for me to just flow. I buy you dinner tonight." And here it is, years later, I got to go with her and take it to the movies. During that time, he's never felt like he had a platform to defuse those lies and tell his side of the storyuntil now. Not about Jean-Claude per se, but about releasing Bloodsport in theaters?Sheldon Lettich: Menahem was persuaded by Samuel Hadida, who had released No Retreat, No Surrender in France (where it was called Karate Tiger) and been a fan of Jean-Claude's ever since then. We're 60 stories in the air, I'm not kidding you. And it was just surreal to her. And he was just a different person. So I watched that happen and then I watched Victor Moore fight Chuck Norris.Blake Harris: Moore fought Bruce Lee and then Chuck Norris? That is not to say that the Tanaka name has no meaning. And he was an idol of Jean-Claude's too.Blake Harris: Yeah? I'll show you a fighter and I'll fight you on the roof of the hotel!" You know, there's a certain romanticism to that. I don't know if the word "genius" is maybe taking it too high, but this is a very smart creative guy who is very much underappreciated. None of it.Blake Harris: InterestingFrank Dux: And Shoto Tanemura, he says he's never heard of a Dukes or a Tanaka? In Etruscan society, gladiatorial games were supposed to be part of the funerary rituals honoring the dead. Also, Idris Elba's voice is just something else. So to compensate, they put me in these metal boots. And then Gary Sinese saw the play in New York and he wanted to put it on in Chicago. It was also seen by Viacom. And because of the braces and how the legs were locked togethera steel bar locked them togetheryou couldn't even waddle, you know? Can you tell me about writing Enter The Ninja? How much of the character's personality is true to the individual who lived those events? Jean-Claude had a three picture deal with Menahem at Cannon and Leon was very impressed with Jean-Claude; we all thought this was a match made in heaven. Although there is no convenient way to verify each and every detail connected with this story, the editors have verified enough of the basic facts to feel confident in publishing it. And one of those people was Sylvester Stallone, who had put the word out that he was looking for someone to help him write Rambo III. And we loved each other at that point.Blake Harris: So you guys were really closeFrank Dux: Yeah, this'll show you how close we were and tie back to what I was saying right before. And I was writing for Stallone at the time and I actually asked Jean-Claude for some help with some of the dialogue for a script I was working on.Blake Harris: I imagine that this was during that timeabout two years or sowhen Bloodsport just kind of sat there on the shelves. Blake Harris: What was the scripting process like for Rambo III, working with Stallone?Sheldon Lettich: He and I were pretty much on the same wavelength for that. Oh man, he f***ing hated that movie. We expect embellishment, we condone narrative condensation and we celebrate character-driven points of view. And he was friendly to me. But I got over it.Blake Harris: Well, given that physically you were not a prime candidate for hand-to-hand combat, how did the idea of martial arts even first cross your radar?Frank Dux: As a kid, as a young kid, I was a James Bond fan. Well I did, and I landed one right on his nose.Blake Harris: Really?Frank Dux: Yeah, and he was not happy about that. Bloodsport is a 1988 American martial arts film directed by Newt Arnold, and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Donald Gibb, Leah Ayres, and Bolo Yeung. And I remember watching a movie where James Bond was doing jujitsu. So I climbed up on the ledge with him. So the play was groundbreaking in some ways. He liked the authenticity in it and he'd heard about Tracers also. How conscious were youand I don't mean with that movie, but in generalabout that kind of formula. Wow. And then he said, "What the hell are we doing out here?" But what's crazy is almost everything he says in that interview is an outright lie or a distortion.Blake Harris: I've interviewed a lot of people in my timeincluding a lot of people I believe were trying to sell me on liesbut I never got the sense from Frank that he was trying to put one over on me. And the two of them wrote this first draft. You can listen to theBloodsportedition of the HDTGM podcasthere. It was "Dukes." The red one, the blue one, the black one. And there'd be a bunch of people there with phones to record it, so we don't want this to happen.Blake Harris: Speaking of that screening, Frank had mentioned that you were crushed. And he said yeah. That picture with my hands crossed, you can see Bloodsport in the background. What I had done was I had the fight, like in Bloodsport, but there was one little caveat difference: In between doing these fights, he was also doing stuff to help people on the street. And then the fight was on. But I'm curious, getting back to what you were saying earlierand what to ultimately led to that story you describedat what point was the producer Mark DiSalle convinced that Jean-Claude would work? "Frank Dux: Yeah. He's a real talent when it comes to that. Then all of the sudden I got hit in the face with a Black Dragon shirt, and that's how I became the youngest Black Dragon in the history of the Black Dragons.Blake Harris: That's unbelievable. One of the key sequences in the film finds Task Force X sent to free Rick Flag from an enemy camp. And it's interesting because they hide that, you know? Or, better yet, where does that phrase come from?Frank Dux: Oh, that's easy. And we did. They did sequels and I've never gotten paid for them when I was supposed to. Nobody clapped or wanted to have their picture taken with you. Either way, it's fair to say that filmgoers are a pretty forgiving lot. And then Moore took me and Grant and started showing us some stuff. This thingwhatever it was calledit was really cool and it would be a cool way to meet chicks.Blake Harris: And how did you go from passively enjoying these things to actual participating and learning how to fight?Frank Dux: I guess one of the things that helped push me in that direction was that I befriended a kid named Grant who had it far worse than myself. "We have no recollection of such a tournament," said Kenneth Wilson, a spokesman for the Ministry of Sports in the Bahamas.
